WHY??????
· The Spiral allows you to record information and process it to improve your level of understanding. Writing down lecture notes does not necessarily mean that you have learned all of the material. You must do something with the information to fully understand it. Note taking is an active process.
· You will organize as you learn. You record ideas about activities and discussions. You will use organizational techniques such as topic headings, colored highlights, and different writing styles to synthesize concepts. This is a life skill.
· It gives you permission to be playful and creative in your responses without messing up your notes. Making it personal and making connections helps you remember more.
· Your notes are the ultimate study guides. If you review your notes you absorb information in smaller packages than cramming the night before the test. You need to learn in small chunks so that your brain can process the information.Q. What is the first thing I will need to be successful in Social Studies class?
FAQ
Q. What is the purpose of the DEN Spiral?
In the Spiral, students record information about our study of history in an engaging and meaningful way. It is important that students become involved first hand in taking notes as well as participating in class. The individual student work in this spiral is used not only as a study guide but also for students to demonstrate what they have learned.
Q. What materials do I need at home to assist me?
-Glue Stick or stapler, Colored pencils, Pencil and pen – more than one color, Highlighter
Please review the in course materials list included in the course outline. It is helpful to have onset for school and one set for home.
Q. How will the Spiral be graded?
Each homework assignment will be checked and stamped for completion. In addition, The Spiral will be collected and graded periodically (weekly, every other week, etc.) It will be graded on thoroughness, quality, organization, and visual appeal. A separate grade will be given after the spiral check in addition to the coursework grades. Points will be taken off for poor care, doodling and not highlighting notes etc. All assignments will be assessed.
Q. What are homework stamps?
Homework stamps are given on the day a homework assignment is due. A stamp means the homework assignment was checked, found complete, on time and the directions were followed. Homework assignments are not credited on Schoolloop until The Spiral is collected for the Notebook Check. Only assignments with homework stamps will receive Full credit.
Q. What about late work?
If a student is absent, he/she may make up all work missed following the SAES handbook policy of one day given per day missed. It is the students responsibility to make up all work including obtaining notes from the teacher or a classmate and handouts from the extra handout bin. Once the work is completed it is the students responsibility to turn it in to the teacher for a Homework Stamp. (The teacher may sign the spiral instead of stamping indicating full credit but turned in late due to absence.)
If the student did not complete the work on the date it was due, he/she may turn in all work one day late for 70% credit per the SAES Handbook. The student must bring the work to the teacher for a stamp or signature indicating that the work was completed one day late.
Work that does not have a stamp will receive zero credit!
